Nola feels the strong oceanic trade winds under her wings, lifting her high above the Raunfit ships. A cool breeze rushes past her feathered face.
While it is a plain fact that she has two wings, she most certainly does not have the size, beak, or webbed feet of an albatross.
Any keen-eyed ornithologist would have spotted the difference straight away. Fortunately, the professionally superstitious sailors see what they want to see. Nola cannot keep the sun behind her with all the ships at once, but she can keep the air moving and cause a blur or motion around herself. From the deck of the ships, she is an albatross. Of course, what other bird would be this far out?
Back home in the mountains, Nola can summon storm winds and keep them blowing for hours, but only as a wolf. She cannot perform magic in her avatar state other than changing back to her natural form. Not one to be easily dissuaded, she found it was possible to lift herself with winds and fly around as a wolf, but this takes a constant effort to stay aloft. After several hard, painful landings, she conceded it was easier to fly like a bird. Having sorted out her transportation issues, she still had a bigger concern.
âHow do I use magic while I am flying?â
Answer: âWhat if I am not always flying?â
Nola discovered the solution was to fly very high with her wings and then transform back into a wolf so that she could conjure the wind. Of course, the instant she transforms into a wolf, she starts to plummet. The higher she goes, the more time she has to control the wind. This isnât enough time to muster sustained storms, but she can whip the winds up and form water spouts.
In truth, Nola doesnât control the spouts; she doesnât have time. She simply whips them up like giant destructive tops and then falls out of the sky like an anchor. Skydiving is not second nature for a wolf, but Nola keeps herself as wide as possible to control her fall. Diving into the ocean from a great height is an actual trait for a hawk, but she has no intention of trying this as a wolf.
So far, she changes back into her osprey self each time before smacking into the water as a wolf. It takes Nola many attempts to find the best jump height. At 3,000 meters, she doesnât have enough time to build formidable energy. At 5,000 meters, she can build up terrifying cyclone winds, but it dissipates at this height, and the cyclones spin themselves off target.
She finally settled on 4,000 meters, which allowed her roughly 60 seconds of freefall. Time enough to whip up a spiraling cyclone wind, aim for a target, drop the payload, and pull up before crashing into the sea.
The instant the wind touches the water, it is sucked up like a straw, and the waterspouts top off at 10 to 12 meters of raging fury.
